The sign cost him $21,000 and was covered in thousands of lightbulbs to make it visible from miles away. After being lit up for only four months, some of the letters began to collapse due to high winds.

Almost 60 years later, the sign was on its last legs and needed some serious restoration work. By this point, “LAND” had been removed from the sign so it simply read “Hollywood” but it was still falling apart. In 1978, Hugh Hefner organized a fundraiser gala to raise money for its restoration and managed to get celebrities like Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor to attend. Thanks to their help (and everyone else who donated), they raised enough money not only for restoration efforts but also future maintenance costs. As part of the renovations, they removed all remaining lightbulbs that had been added during Chandler’s original construction process so that it would be easier to maintain going forward.
